Appointment Type:  Permanent-Exempt (PEX), Category 18. This position is excluded by the Charter from the competitive Civil Service examination process and shall serve at the discretion of the Appointing Officer. The duration of the appointment is not to exceed 36 months.

Public Works currently has a vacancy for a Materials Testing Aide (5304).

Working Conditions:
You will handle 55-gallon drums to collect samples, lift 90-pound bags of cement with assistance, lift 5-gallon buckets of soil samples, use a wheelbarrow, coring machine, and other materials or equipment to collect samples or conduct tests. Also, you will be required to work for extended periods on uneven ground and in inclement weather.

Under immediate supervision, as a Materials Testing Aide, you will perform routine and nonprofessional duties in the laboratory and field concerned with soils, concrete, steel, and construction materials testing.

Important and Essential Duties:

As a Materials Testing Aide, your duties may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Collecting soils samples in the field.
  • Under immediate supervision, assisting in making soil tests to determine if proper materials or compaction of earth fill is being secured.
  • Testing other construction Materials in accordance with instructions.
  • Ensuring that all samples received are identified and tested in accordance with standards and established procedures.
  • Performing field tests as scheduled and reporting unusual conditions to the supervisor.
  • Keeping testing equipment in clean and good condition, and cleaning testing laboratory.
  • Making calculations and keeping simple records of tests performed.

Completion of high school, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

License:
Possession and maintenance of a valid class C California driver's license.

  • Experience in a position in which primary duties consisted of sampling and testing soils or construction materials.
  • Possession of the following Certificates:
    • ACI Field Certification(s)
    • ACI Laboratory Certification(s)
    • NICET Certification(s)
    • Nuclear Gauge Safety Certification 

Note:  One-year full-time employment is considered equivalent to 2000 hours (2000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40-hour work week). Any overtime hours that you work above forty (40) hours per week are not included in the calculation to determine full-time employment.
