The Oakland Police Department is hiring Police Officer Trainees. Ideal candidates should demonstrate personal motivation, an interest in others, and the ability to effectively and fairly interact with residents and co-workers. Candidates should also be adept at problem-solving under pressure and eager to work in a fast-paced, urban environment.
Upon successful completion of the academy, Police Officers receive step increases annually and may reach the top step after five years. Immediate benefits include city-paid health and dental insurance for employees and dependents. Upon graduation, the benefits package also includes a pension through CalPERS, vacation leave, sick leave, holidays, education tuition reimbursement, life insurance, employee assistance programs, and a deferred compensation plan.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: Diploma from an accredited U.S. high school or G.E.D. certificate.
Age: Must be 21 years old by the time of graduation from the academy.
Driver's License: Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License.
Criminal Record: No felony convictions or misdemeanor convictions that would prevent carrying a firearm.
Citizenship: Must be a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident who is eligible for and has applied for U.S. citizenship.
Candidates may be screened out at any point in the process based on the position requirements. The Oakland Police Department reserves the right to waive selection components for individuals based on prior experience or certification.
Application and Selection Procedures:
Step 1: Submit Application - Online Only
Submit your application online through the designated platform by the closing date. Computer stations are available at any City of Oakland Public Library for those without internet access.
Step 2: Self-Schedule Virtual Written Exam
The National Testing Network (NTN) Frontline Written Examination must be completed by September 13, 2024. This can be done virtually or in-person at various locations. Written test scores must be submitted to the OPD Recruiting and Background Unit by this date.
Step 3A: Physical Ability Test
The Physical Ability Test is scheduled for September 28, 2024, at Merritt College, Oakland, CA. The written exam must be submitted or scheduled by September 13, 2024, to participate.
Step 3B: Oral Exam
Successful candidates will be invited to participate in an Oral Exam on September 28, 2024. This exam will assess job-related skills such as oral communication, interpersonal skills, and judgment.
Candidates who pass the Oral Exam will be placed on a ranked eligibility list for further consideration. Placement on the eligibility list does not guarantee employment. Preference points are awarded to Oakland residents and veterans.
Step 4: Background Investigation Process and Chief's Character Review & Interview
Selected candidates will undergo a thorough background investigation, including a polygraph examination. Upon successful completion, candidates will face a Chief's Character Review Panel, followed by an interview with the Chief of Police. A conditional job offer will be made contingent on passing medical and psychological exams.
Additional Information:
Residency and Veteran's Preference Points: Oakland residents and veterans may claim preference points. Proof of residency or a Form DD-214 must be provided at the Oral Exam.
Selective Certification: Some positions may require bilingual skills in Spanish, Cantonese, or Mandarin.
Fee Waiver: NTN charges a nominal fee for its test. Candidates with financial hardship may request a fee waiver before registering for the exam. Requests must be submitted by September 13, 2024.
