Normally we cook plain yellow dal but sometimes when the mood strikes and when there is a bit of extra time on hand we make tempered dal.

  • Ingredients
  • 600 gms Oily Toor dal soak at 06.30 am. Change the water a couple of times so that you can cook the dal in the soaked clean water at 10.30 am. Water should fully submerge the dal.
  • 1/4 teaspoon Salt as required
  • 1/2 teaspoon Turmeric powder
  • 1 green chilly deseeded and chopped
  • 2 medium tomatoes grated
  • 2 medium onions chopped
  • Small bunch coriander chopped
  • 3 tablespoon pure ghee
  • 5 tablespoon oil for frying
  • 1 teaspoon ginger garlic paste
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin powder
  • Half of 1/4 teaspoon red chilly powder


    In a cooker add dal with the soaking water put the gas on highest flame setting shut the cooker and add the whistle and cook the dal till 15 minutes.
    After one whistle shut the gas.
    After about 5-10 minutes of shutting the gas or till the steam completely evaporates remove the whistle open the cooker and strain the dal.
    When the dal is cooking in the pressure cooker in a non stick pan add oil and fry chopped onions till brown along with 1 chilly deseeded and chopped on medium flame setting.
    Add grated tomatoes, ginger garlic paste, cumin powder, and red chilly powder. Mix well and sauté.
    Add chopped coriander and mix well for 2 minutes then shut the gas.
    Pour the strained dal back into the cooker and all ingredients and mix well.
    Put the gas on highest flame setting.
    Taste if more spices or salt required.
    Add pure ghee mix well and cook further till dal boils.
    Shut the gas and after a couple of minutes to let the steam settle serve dal hot with either chapatis or bread or steam white rice and ketchup or pickles.
