Typically the dosa and idli batter are prepared separately however this batter solves the problem and serves for both. Idli & dosa batter recipe is prepared with idli rice which obliviously can be used for preparing idli with soft and spongy dosas.

  • Idli and Dosa Ingredients
  • 3 cups idli rice or parboiled rice
  • ½ tsp fenugreek seeds (methi)
  • 1 cup urad dal
  • Water to soak
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • Oil for roasting dosa and greasing idli plate


    Idli Method
    Soak idli rice and fenugreek seeds for 6 hours.
    In another bowl soak urad dal for 4 hours.
    Drain the water and blend to smooth batter.
    Cover and rest in warm place for 8-10 hours.
    Add in salt to the batter and mix well. Adjust salt level according to your taste.
    Scoop the batter into idli moulds.
    Place the idli plate into steamer and steam for 10-12 minutes.
    Dosa Method
    You can also use the same batter to prepare dosa,
    For making dosa pour a ladle of batter onto the hot greased non stick pan.
    Spread gently.
    Sprinkle oil on top (optional).
    Cook for a minute.
